1969 Mustang Boss 429
|
Getting an engine into NASCAR is not as easy as getting one into drag racing. Drag racing was satisfied with 50 cars
to be class legal but NASCAR required 500.The Boss 429 was basically a "Hemi Hunter" with Ford's own hemispherical
head design and huge ports to flow massive amounts of fuel and air.The Torino Talledega was being used to not only
get the aerodynamic front end to meet the numbers but also the 428 Cobra Jet motors. The Boss 429 engines would be
put into 499 Mustangs and I believe that a hand full of Mercurys also received the engine as well.
It would appear that Ford did not trust the general public with it's new Super Engine because it drastically detuned
this engine down to 375 horsepower. These cars were not the barn burners that Hemi Cuda's were because of the detune.
It is my understanding that there was factory camshaft that you could get with the car,or the dealer could install
it for you, that would pull a full second out of the car in a 1/4 mile.
